The Arrival of Electric RVs: Powering the Road Ahead

Written by Greg Long

The Pebble Flow All-Electric RV

Ten years ago we began hearing how electric vehicles will become the “new norm” for traveling America’s highways. When I first heard that, I was like, “Yeah, right.” I thought there was no way EVs would replace gas-powered engines.

As the years have zipped by, I’ve witnessed a slow, but steady growth in the number of EVs on the road.

As a blog writer for Bish’s RV, I never thought I’d be writing about EVs and RVs – but here I am doing just that.

From government incentives to the surprising uptick in EV interest amid soaring gas prices, this article explores the evolving relationship between EVs and RVs, so you can decide if EVs and RVs are a good match for your style of outdoor adventuring.

EVs and RVs: A Shocking Relationship

The Drive for EV-Friendly RVs and Motorhomes

While a lot of people, like me, thought EVs were just a passing fade, it’s clear that this trend is here to stay, thanks in large part to significant government funding.

One notable figure in the EV industry, Elon Musk, has also played a pivotal role in promoting electric vehicles.

Government initiatives have been designed to reinvent the EV charging landscape. And now we’re starting to see innovative companies, like Airstream, Pebble, and Winnebago, begin promoting EV-friendly RVs and all-electric motorhomes.

RVIA’s Lobbying Efforts – Make Charging EVs Easier

RV Industry Association (RVIA) has been actively lobbying for an easier approach to EV charging stations across the country. They emphasize the importance of pull-through charging sites, which are currently scarce.

The conventional method of unhooking an RV, moving to a charging station, and re-hooking can be cumbersome.

RVIA argues that these charging sites should be more accessible, allowing for a smoother transition to electric RVs.

Leisure Travelers Embrace EVs

One of the most surprising revelations is the connection between leisure travelers and EV ownership. Here are some statistics that may astonish you:

  • 30% of leisure travelers who have used an RV already own an electric vehicle.
  • An astonishing 17% of leisure travelers who have used an RV plan to buy an electric vehicle within a year.
  • An additional 16% of RV users plan to purchase an electric vehicle sometime in the future.
  • 50% of leisure travelers who own an electric vehicle intend to tow an RV with it.
  • Remarkably, 22% of current electric vehicle owners and 30% of those planning to buy an electric vehicle are considering purchasing an electric motorhome.

Epic Fail! Charging Station Breakdown

While the excitement surrounding EVs and RVs continues to build, a new problem is emerging—failing charging stations.

Despite substantial investments in building charging stations in cities, there has been a lack of foresight in terms of maintenance and support. Here’s what’s happening:

  • Approximately 6% of active charging stations, nearly 4,000 stations nationally, are currently out of service and in need of repair.
  • Charge station technicians are in short supply, and the lack of trained professionals exacerbates the problem.

The focus so far has been on building charging stations, with limited attention to training and support for the workers required to maintain these charging stations.

Without prompt action, we may find ourselves with a surplus of out-of-order charging stations, rendering them useless to EV and RV users alike.

The Future of Electric RVs

It’s becoming clear, even to people who resist change (like me) that EVs and RVs are growing in popularity.

Government funding, lobbying efforts, and the surprising enthusiasm of leisure travelers are driving this shift.

However, as we venture further into this electrifying frontier, we must address the growing challenges related to EV charging station placement and maintenance.

As the EV revolution continues to gain momentum, prepare to see large name-brand RV Manufacturers begin to roll out EV-friendly campers and all-electric RVs.
