What to Look For When Buying a New RV

A little know-how goes a long way, even on a brand new unit. These are the things worth checking before you sign.

Tow Ratings, Weight, and Payload

How much your truck can tow is set by three numbers in your owner's manual: tow rating, payload capacity, and gross combined weight rating. Payload is what stops most buyers, because tongue weight, passengers, and cargo all count against it. A safe practice is to keep the RV's gross vehicle weight rating at or below 80 percent of your tow rating, and to shop against gross vehicle weight rating rather than dry weight.

Floor Plans, Features, and Model Year

Floor plan matters more than length. Two 32-foot trailers with identical weights can suit completely different households depending on where the beds, bath, and kitchen sit. Decide early whether you need a bunkhouse, a rear living area, an outdoor kitchen, or a Murphy bed, then filter from there. Also check the model year: outgoing model-year units are discounted the most during changeover, typically late summer into fall.
